ZAMFARA: Ex-bandits are helping to fight banditry, Matawalle says

The convoy of Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle was reportedly attacked by suspected bandits on Sunday, while he (Matawalle) was on his way to condole with victims of a community in Gusau Local Government over a previous attack.

Reports say the bandits, who came out in their numbers, took advantage of the bushy terrain to open fire on the motorcade, with the governor’s security details quickly returning gunshots as they were able to protect and evacuate their principal from the scene of the incident.

In a statement issued by Yusuf Idris, the acting press secretary to the governor, Matawalle who was enroute Lilo community to condole with victims of an earlier attack which occurred on Saturday, said the governor was not deterred by the incident.

According to Mr Idris, the bandits abandoned their hideouts and fled after the onslaught during the exchange of gunfire with security details of the governor.

“Despite this, the governor did not feel discouraged and moved ahead to Lilo village for the condolence visit,” the statement by Mr Idris read in part.

After the attack on Matawalle’s convoy, the governor declared when he finally arrived Lilo village, that his administration may soon start implementing death penalty on bandits’ informants in the state.

According to Matawalle, his administration would not tolerate some citizens supporting bandits to carry out their criminal activities while pretending to be good fellows.

“We are going to send an executive bill to the state house of assembly immediately after the inauguration of the lawmakers and l want to assure the good citizens that if the bill is passed, it will be implemented to the letter,” he said.
