ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION: IGP Idris hints he may appear before Senate

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has finally hinted of his willingness to appear before the Senate ad hoc committee probing the allegations leveled against him by Senator Isabella Misau.

Misau, who represents Bauchi Central senatorial district, in the Senate had accused Idris of receiving as much as N2.5 million from police officers to give them special promotion.

According to him, the IGP makes as much as N12 billion annually from the Nigeria Police for himself.

He also accused the IGP of diverting money meant for the purchase of Armoured Personal Carriers, Sports Utility Vehicles and other exotic cars as well as Idris’ posting of almost half of his Nupe people as mobile commanders in the country, among many other allegations of fraud.

The police boss had on Wednesday refused to honour the summon by the Senate committee over claims that he was already challenging the mater in court.

In a letter to the committee through his lawyer, Alex Iziyon (SAN), Idris had informed the panel that his appearance would be sub judice as there were pending cases in court on the matter.

However, when he spoke with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after he had a brief with President Muhammadu Buhari on current security challenges and how the police are confronting them, he said he was consulting with his legal team on his appearance.

“These are legal issues. We are discussing with our legal team. Obviously, if there is need, we are going to appear for the sake of having respect for the Senate. I will appear before them,” he said.

Speaking on the November 18, Anambra State governorship election, he hinted that about 21,000 policemen, water boats and helicopters would be deployed for the November election.

“We are deploring a lot of police officers, almost about 21,000 police officers to be able to provide adequate security in the Anambra election.

“We are deploying our water boats to take care of the waterways; we are deploying our helicopters to take care of the aerial surveillance and we are deploying our conventional policemen and special police units to take care of situations on ground.
“By the grace of God, we are going to have a successful and peaceful election in Anambra State,” he said.
