Arik workers go haywire in protest over non-payment of salary arrears

Workers of Arik Air on Monday staged a protest at the local wing of the Muritala Muhammed airport in Ikeja protesting non payment of their salaries and other remunerations for seven months.

It was gathered that the National Union of Air Transport Employees, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers and the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria on Monday issued a statement instigating their members to go on strike.

The workers displayed placards with write-ups such as; “We are against bad labour practices”, “Pay us our 7 months arrears” “Enough is enough of slavery”.

Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, the acting Chairman of United Labour Congress (ULC) explained that the strike action was necessary as workers can no longer condole the hardship they face any longer.

He said, “We have shut down Arik Airlines operations, due to non-payment of seven months salary and non- remittance of workers’ taxes to relevant agencies.

“The office will remain shut until the end of the year, unless the management reaches a compromise with our union on the anti-labour issues.

“We cannot continue to watch Arik Airlines’ management maltreating our members. Enough is enough.

“It is a pity that many intending passengers are stranded because of our action but we have appealed to the management to look into our demand but to no avail”, he said.
