BANDITRY: What govt expects from media, by Lai Mohammed

A call has been made to the Nigerian media practitioners, urging them to support the efforts of the Federal Government in its fight against insurgency and banditry especially in the northern part of country.

The plea was made by the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Saturday, at the 2019 Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors at Ikeja, Lagos.

Mohammed who was represented at the event by the Director of Information in the ministry, Mr. Sunday Baba, also urged the media to support the military and the present administration’s effort to bequeath a virile and egalitarian society through concerted and sustained attacks on the ills of society.

He said; “As media practitioners, you have a responsibility to steer the government toward purposeful programmes and policies that would engender national, growth and cohesiveness. In this light, government expects the media to always advance the national cause by upholding the sanctity of peace, nationalism and the benefits of the pluralism of our society.”

The call by Mohammed was made after the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai, cried about about the influx of bandits into states like Kaduna, Kano and Niger after fleeing Zamfara and Katsina states.

Buratai, who spoke at a press conference at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, on the ‘Reorganisation of Exercise Harbin Kunama III’, claimed that the bandits are fleeing from Zamfara into this other states.

He also announced that the announced that the army would be conducting the special exercise in the affected areas to rid them of the bandits and other criminal elements.
