BRAZIL: Fresh graft charges leveled against President Temer

It is not yet uhuru for embattled President of Brazil, Michel Temer as fresh new graft charges of obstruction of justice and racketeering were leveled against him on Thursday.

According to a statement posted on the prosecutor general’s office website, it is alleged that Temer threatening to delay the government’s economic reform agenda in Congress.

However, Temer in a statement on Thursday, strongly rejected all allegations of wrongdoing.

Only last month, Congress rejected corruption charges against Temer, preventing him from Supreme Court trial which could have seen him ousted from office.

According to reports, at least 172 of the 513 members of the lower Chamber of Deputies had voted against putting Temer on trial last month, thereby rejecting a corruption charge against him for allegedly taking bribes.

Speaking after Temer secured his stay in office, Al Jazeera’s Daniel Schweimler, reporting from Brasilia, said Temer was always confident he would win the vote and had pledged over $1bn of government funds for projects to various members of congress to ensure their vote.
