Buhari disowns #Istandwithbuhari

The Federal Government, on Saturday, announced the sack of all the 12 Vice Chancellors of the Federal Universities established by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and that of the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, Prof. Vincent Tenebe.

The sack was contained in a statement by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, in Abuja on Saturday.

The statement, without disclosing the reason for their sack, simply said that President Muahammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of new vice chancellors for the universities.

The action of government has however drawn the anger of some members of the accademic community and civil society organisations.

According to some members of the academic community, it is only the Governing Council of NOUN that can remove the VC. Tenebe is a member of the NOUN council.

Similarly, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups, CCSG, has risen against the sack of the NOUN VC demanding for a reversal in a protest letter to President Buhari.

Tenebe was replaced with the Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano.

According to CCSG, in its protest letter to President Buhari, the sack contravenes the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No.11 of 1993 (as amended) by decree No.25, 1996 and further amended in 2003 and 2012 respectively and other agreements as contained in the 2009 FGN staff union agreement. The protest letter was signed by CCSG president, Etuk Bassey Williams and secretary-general, Ibrahim Abubakar.

Continuing, CCSG said four out of the 12 newly appointed vice chancellors are from Bayero University, Kano, an action they described as a glaring violation of the federal character principle.
