CAF CONFEDERATION CUP: FC Ifeanyi Ubah win, Wikki Tourists lose

Nigerian Professional Football League side FC Ifeanyiubah secured a slim 1-0 win against Egyptian side, Al- Masry in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie in Nnewi on Sunday.

Tame Medrano gave the home team the victory when he fired through a shot in the 87th minute and sent the crowd at Nnewi into a frenzy.

The visitors’ only attempt at goal was ably contained by host goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa who was virtually on holiday for a larger part of the match, as the home team took all the advantage.

Reacting to the game, Chairman of FC IfeanyiUbah, Chuma Ubah said: “We played well and the result is good for us. But unfortunately we could not utilise the chances.

“My players are experienced enough, and I am confident that we are going to do better in Egypt when we go for the second leg.”

But Nigeria’s other representative, Wikki Tourists, who were making their debut, fell to a 2-0 defeat against Royal Sierra Leonean Armed Forces Football Club at the Siaka Steven Stadium, Freetown.

The Nigerians conceded the opener from the hosts on 20 minutes, and took in another late in the first half.

Though the Mohammed Babagaru’s men improved after the break, they were unable to claw their way back into the game; but will hope to overturn the deficit when they host the Sierra Leoneans at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi next Sunday.
