Container falls off bridge, kills 3

Three people were killed yesterday when a heavy duty container fell from Ojuelegba bridge in Surulere area of Lagos State and landed on a Nissan saloon car and a Sports Utility Vehicle.
The accident happened around 4.45p.m. but the container was lifted off the vehicles by 9 p.m.
During the four hours that the incident lasted, there was a stampede on the route as some motorists abandoned their vehicles and took to their heels.
Some fleeing motorists and commuters sustained varied degrees of injuries in the process.
The driver of the truck fled immediately the incident happened.

For over three hours, rescue teams struggled to remove the container from the SUV to save the driver who was trapped inside.
The cause of the accident could not be verified as the driver had escaped from the scene.
But the Lagos State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Hyginus Omeje, stated that the container was latched because it fell alongside the flat belt on which it was hooked.
