COVID-19: Nigerian govt to reject returnees’ request to self-isolate at home

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said on Friday the Federal Government would not accept the request to self-isolate in their homes by Nigerians abroad willing to return to the country.

Onyeama, who stated this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, declared that the government would not accept such request because of the difficulty in monitoring them.

He said: “We will not accept the request to self-isolate because it will be difficult to monitor them. That is our position.”

He told journalists that the limited bed spaces and isolation centres in the country might have informed the returnees’ demand for self-isolation in their homes when they returned to the country.

The minister added: “The truth is that we do not have enough isolation centres and bed spaces.

”We are looking for hotels in Lagos and I have spoken to the Governor of Lagos. If we can get some, that will be fine.”

Onyeama said the Chinese Ambassador had promised that his country would assist Nigeria to fight the virus in any way possible.
