COVID-19: Over 100 Italian medics have died at the frontlines of the crisis —Report

Italy has lost over a hundred medics — 80 doctors and 21 nurses —since the battle against the global COVID-19 pandemic began.

Medics and hospital staff in Italy have described as “traumatic” watching their colleagues succumb to the virus and the pressure they face tackling the country’s over 124,600 infected patients.

Director of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Spedali Civili hospital Professor Francesco Castelli told reporters: ‘We were asking each other who will be the next and that, of course, is psychologically demanding because apart from colleagues, we are friends.

‘All of us have some kind of concern about bringing the contagion back to our homes. If you put all that together…the workload, the fatigue, the tiredness…that is fairly psychologically demanding.’ he added

There are at least 300 medics infected with the virus in Italy’s stricken Lombardy, Northern Italy, and 120,00 hospital staffs diagnosed nationwide.

Medics have blamed the high infection and death rate on the lack of protective equipments and are of the opinion that the real death toll could be above the official tally as reports tracked only hospital fatalities.

Authorities in Italy are now making efforts in reinforcing primary health services after intensive care capacity to meet WHO recommendations.
