C’River to abandon national festival –Investigation

There are strong indications that the Cross River State Government is considering abandoning the hosting of the 19th National Sports Festival.

According to sources, the state government, which is currently facing different financial challenges, no longer considers hosting the festival to be a top priority.

The festival, which was originally scheduled to hold in 2014 to coincide with the celebration of Nigeria’s amalgamation, suffered a setback following the inability of the state to complete the projects for the multisport event.

The Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Orok Duke, had in a recent media interview said the state was ready to host the festival.

But Punch correspondent, who went round Calabar to inspect the facilities earmarked for the competition, observed that work had stopped on the projects.
