Egwero, Oduduru shine in Sapele Golden League

It was a fierce battle at the Sapele Township Stadium at the weekend when Nigerian athletes continued their quest to run the qualification standard for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, at the second Athletic Federation of Nigeria organised Golden League.

Ogho-Oghene Egwero and Divine Oduduru were the most outstanding athletes after both churned out impressive times to win the 100m and 200m respectively.

Egwero got the spectators cheering after running the fastest time by a Nigeria male athlete this year, winning heat 2 in 10.15secs (+2.3). Oduduru finished with the second fastest time overall having won heat 1 clocking 10.38secs, while Odele Tega who finished 2nd in the same heat 1 was third overall clocking 10.42secs.

In the 200m, Oduduru came very close to matching his Personal Best of 20.45secs after storming to the finishing line in 20.47secs (+3.4) and was so elated seeing his time that he raced back almost 50m celebrating. Egwero and Tega finished 2nd and 3rd in 21.08secs and 21.15secs respectively.

Isoken Igbinosun won both the 100m and 200m in the women’s category. She ran the fastest time in the 100m heats to win in 11.50secs, with Agnes Osazuwa second overall having won a stacked heat 3 in 11.52secs and Alphonsus Aniekeme 3rd overall in 11.60secs finishing 2nd in that same heat.

Igbinosun later won the women’s 200m final, clocking 23.69secs (+2.4) with Mercy Ntiaobong 2nd in 23.84secs and Osazuwa 3rd in 24.13secs.

Other events competed for in Sapele were 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles won by Grace Ayemoba and Martins Ogieriakhi.

Ilorin will be the next city to host the Golden League on May 28, with Akure gearing up for the final next month.
