Egypt’s embattled president, Morsi dies during trial

Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi who was overthrown by the military in 2013 after a year in office, collapsed in Cairo court while on trial on Monday and died.

According to CNN, the 67 year-old, had just been led back to a soundproof glass cage inside the courtroom when he fell unconscious. Reports revealed the cause of death was a heart attack.

Activists and his family had long said Morsi was not receiving treatment for serious health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and was constantly being held in solitary confinement.

During his time in prison, Morsi was allowed only three visits from relatives and was denied access to his lawyers or a doctor, according to human rights group Amnesty International.

Morsi, had already been sentenced to more than 45 years in prison in three separate trials, including for leading an outlawed group, detention and torture of anti-government protesters and leaking state secrets.
