Failed suicide car bomb targeting Somali military chief kills one civilian

Somali security chief, General Yusuf Rage, has escaped a suicide bombing attack on Monday in Mogadishu.

The attacker was said to have driven his bomb-laden car close to the commander’s convoy near the military hospital in the Hodan district of Mogadishu when the blast occured, a military spokesperson said.

“The commander’s guards opened fire on the suicide car bomb as it speedily tried to swerve into the convoy. The bomber was shot dead and his car bomb exploded. The commander and his guards escaped unhurt,” he said.

Al Qaeda linked terrorist group Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility for the attack stating that they had conducted a “martyrdom operation” targeting a “military convoy escorting senior apostate commanders.”

The state’s ambulance said it had recovered the body of one civilian after the blast.
