Fani Kayode : The tirade of an emotional demagogue

By Joseph Edgar… I have followed very closely Fani Kayode’s public statements. I have read very closely all of his public utterances ever since he came back into limelight during the Obasanjo regime and have come to the conclusion that this is a different kind of rabble rouser.

His positions always comes across as steeped in emotional diatribe and devoid of the intellectual infrastructure that should be taken seriously. Sometimes copiously borrowing from the bible and other mythical sources, he painfully and most times fails to link the mythical stories to happenings in present day Nigeria. He always mostly falls down flat on his face, missing the mark and only succeeding in creating a tipple instead of the massive storm his lethargic diatribe was conceived to create.

His positives remained uncanny courage, his ability to remain bold and loquacious in the face of an intellectual hollownnes that should make a serious public ignore him. I have just read his lates homily on the return of polio to Nigeria and the loss of our position as the largest economy in Africa. He has placed the fault squarely on the foot of the present government falling back on a faulty knowledge of Greek mythology to explain away his position that this government is a plaque.

Not being too happy with this government myself, I remain resolute in the firm believe that they and indeed the totality of Nigerians would benefit more from an intellectually sound vehicle of criticisms and not an emotionally laden pendantic vomit of vowels aimed at winning more followers on Twitter and social media instead of guiding and assisting the government and society find its way through the morass of difficulties and challenge we are facing today.

Fani Kayode and his ilk who have succeeded in building a platform of influence through social media and other platforms should be very mindful of their utterances since people and a lot of their followers take what they say at face value lacking the ability to sift through pedestrian analysis while taking their positions.

This government has in itself not really shown dynamism in its approach to our issues as a nation, but then again that does not make them ‘a plaque’ . They have inherited a terrible situation, the economy and political cohesion, and have also been faced with a hemoraghing oil price, a lack of commitment by Nigerians to look inwards in their nihilistic approach to life hence further contributing to the mass purge in our foreign reserve, driving inflation to an all time high and basically conscripting the economy. The government takes the lion share of the blame, but we as Nigerians also have our own share and critics like Kayode owe the society to be balanced in their positions or basically just keep quiet.
