INEC officially notifies Melaye of recall moves, sets date for verification

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said it has officially notified Senator Dino Melaye of efforts by the Kogi West senatorial district, which he represents at the Senate, to recall him.

INEC had on Wednesday received in six bags signatories from some voters in Kogi West senatorial District endorsing the recall of Melaye.

In a statement, INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, explained that following the petition on the development submitted to the commission on Wednesday, that INEC had sat and looked into the matter during its weekly regular meeting held on Thursday.

He said, “In accordance with the INEC guidelines for the recall of members of the National Assembly, the commission has formally acknowledge the receipt of the petition to the petitioner’s representatives and has conveyed a letter notifying Senator Melaye of our receipt of the petition.”

According to Haruna, the commission will now move to the next step which is the verification of the petitioners to ascertain if they are registered voters in the Kogi West Senatorial District.

“On the 3rd of July, 2017 issue a public notice stating the day(s), time, location and other details for the verification exercise,” he said.

Melaye, who had insisted that the state Governor Yahaya Belo was behind the move to recall him, has also maintained that the exercise was a futile one and a comedy of errors, even as he claimed that the signatories were forged.
