Injured Djokovic out for rest of 2017

Tennis star, Novak Djokovic has announced he’s taking time out of tennis for the rest of 2017 as he continues to struggle with an elbow injury.

It was the same injury that forced him to retire from the recently-concluded Wimbledon Open during his quarter-final match with Tomas Berdych.

The World No. 4 was a set-and-a-break down when he could no longer continue and called the game off, saying that his elbow had been troubling him for the last 18 months.

A doctor from his home country claimed he had injured himself further from “excessive playing” and insisted he would now require a long period away from the sport.

The Serb said in a message on his Facebook page: “I have made a decision to not play any competitions or tournaments for the rest of 2017.

“Professionally this is not an easy decision for me, but I’m trying to look at the positive side.”

It means the 12-time Grand Slam champion will miss the US Open, which starts at Flushing Meadows on 28 August, and where he was champion in 2011 and 2015.

“I took time to make a decision about my recovery. Sorry for keeping you in the dark these days,” the former World no. 1 later wrote on Twitter.

His absence from the US Open will end a run of 51 consecutive appearances at Grand Slams.
