Insurgency limits Nigeria's participation in UN peace keeping operations —Dan-Ali

The ongoing war against Boko Haram insurgency in the North East of the country has limited Nigeria’s participation in United Nations peace keeping operations, the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali has said.

The minister stated this during his address at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York.

According to a statement on Saturday, the minister informed the meeting that the Federal Government had put in place adequate measures to enhance the performance of the nation’s troops and protect civilians during peacekeeping operations.

Dan-Ali said: “Nigeria’s participation in UN Peacekeeping has declined significantly of recent, mainly due to her commitment to the fight against insurgency in the North-Eastern part of the country and sub-regional peacekeeping commitments.

“Some successes have been achieved in the fight against terrorism and we are in the process of rebuilding affected communities.

“These successes have no doubt been made possible with the collaboration from the international community and Lake Chad Basin Commission countries.”
