Japan’s U-20 women’s team on Sunday walloped their Nigerian counterpart 6-0 in what could be described as the worst possible start at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

A hat-trick from Mami Ueno, a brace from Yuka Momiki and an own goal by Falconet’s Mary Ologbosere secured Japan the resounding win.

Momiki gave Japan the lead on 34 minutes with Ueno doubling it three minutes later. In the 51st minute Momiki got her second, making it 3-0 and went 4-0 up following an own goal by Mary Ologbosere.

Ueno got on the score sheet on 62 minutes for her second goal and Japan’s fifth before scoring the sixth goal and completed her hat-trick.

This is Japan’s second win against Nigeria at the U-20 World Cup after their first win as hosts in 2012.

In the group’s other game Spain also thrashed Canada 5-0.

The Falconets will hope to get back on their feet when they face Canada on Wednesday, while Spain and Japan will also battle.
