Jega hands over INEC to Wali

Five years after his appointment, Professor Attahiru Jega on Tuesday handed over as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) handing over to Ambassador (Dr.) Ahmed Wali.

The tenure of Prof. Jega which had been a major issue just before the last general elections, officially expired June 30, 2015

Before his appointment as National Commissioners of the (INEC), Wali was a Visiting Reader (Associate Professor) to the Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Chief Executive Officer, Development Strategies International (DSI).

Along with Jega, six other commissioners also quit office same day.

However, fews hours later, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointment of Mrs Amina Bala Zakari as Acting Chairman of the Independent INEC.

Her appointment was contained in a statement released Tuesday from the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Danladi Kifasi. Her appointment takes effect from today June 30, 2015 until the appointment of a substantive Chairman.

Also, the Federal Government on Tuesday appointed Mr. Mordecai Danteni Baba Ladan to oversee the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

The appointment, according to the zonal spokesman Mohammed B. Saidu, followed the expiration of Mr George Osahon’s two-year term on June 19.
