Kenyatta meets with fiery opposition leader Odinga

The political unrest rocking the East African country of Kenya is about to abate with President Uhuru Kenyatta staging a meeting with his fiercest rival and opposition leader in the person of Raila Odinga.

Reports say the two politicians who are meeting for the first time since last year’s contested elections are currently holding talks in the capital Nairobi and it is coming hours before the arrival of US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Nairobi for a four-day state visit.

At a joint news conference with Odinga, President Kenyatta describes the meeting between the two political rivals as “a new beginning” for Kenya.

Kenyatta also added that the meeting “will begin a process of bringing our people together”.
Meanwhile, Odinga says “it is time to resolve our differences”.

Two months ago, there were fears of a fresh outbreak of violence in Kenya as scores of supporters of Odinga gathered in Nairobi to swear in the opposition leader as president.

Security in the Kenyan capital was tightened at the time before and during the self-declared “inauguration” of Odinga’s opposition ‘resistance movement’ which the government declared a criminal group.
