Kovač to replace Heynckes as Bayern boss next season

Former Bayern Munich player, Niko Kovac, has been named as Juup Heynckes’s replacement in head coach position of the German champions from next season.

Bayern made the announcement on Friday via it’s official Twitter handle and on their website.

The Champions League semifinalists brought Heynckes, who led the club to European triumph in 2013, back from retirement midseason after sacking Carlo Ancelotti.

“Niko Kovač will be the new FC Bayern München head coach from the start of the 2018/19 season,” Bayern announced on Friday.

“The German record champions and the 46-year-old have agreed a three-year contract from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2021. His brother Robert Kovač (44) will join Niko Kovač, who is currently Eintracht Frankfurt head coach, as assistant.”

“We’re very delighted we’ve secured the services of Niko Kovač as new FC Bayern head coach,” said sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić.

“Niko played for Bayern, he knows the people in charge and the club’s structures and DNA. We’re convinced he’s the right coach for the future of FC Bayern.”

Kovac who is a former Croatia international played 34 Bundesliga matches for Bayern from 2001 to 2003, scoring three goals. He and his brother Robert won the Intercontinental Cup in 2001 and the German championship in 2002 with FC Bayern.
