Lagos govt confirms death of 56-yr-old due to COVID-19 complications

The Lagos State government led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed the death of a 56-year-old Nigerian man who passed on due to COVID19-related complications at a hospital in the state.

This was confirmed in a post on Twitter by the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, on Tuesday April 14.

Prof Abayomi also revealed in the post on social media that the deceased recently returned to the country from the US.

”13 new cases of #COVID19 infection confirmed…Total number of confirmed cases in Lagos is now 192. 6 additional fully recovered #COVID19 patients; 5 males and 1 female were discharged.

“Total number of #COVID19 patients that have recovered and discharged are now 61.

“A 56 year old Nigerian male who recently returned from the United States has died of #COVID19 related complication. This brings the total number of #COVID19 related deaths in Lagos to 6,” he wrote.

This comes after the Federal Government on Tuesday said Nigerians returning to the country through the government’s arranged evacuation would be compulsorily quarantined on arrival.

According to the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the returnees would not be allowed to self isolate as some of them are known to break the rules, adding that government won’t jeopardise the health of about 200 million Nigerians by permitting citizens coming into the country to observe self-isolation.

Dabiri-Erewa, who disclosed this while answering questions on her Twitter handle on Tuesday, added that upon entry into Nigeria, they would be quarantined at a location approved by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for two weeks and tested for COVID-19.
