MAMA 2016: Yemi Alade makes history, Wizkid scoops 3 awards
‘Johnny’ crooner Yemi Alade made history at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) 2016 staged in the South African city of Johannesburg by becoming the first African female act to win the coveted Best Female Act category back-to-back (2015 & 2016)
Yemi Alade who wowed at the event when she mounted the stage to an outstanding live performance emerged winner in the Best Female Act category which included other stellar acts like sensational singer Tiwa Savage, and other African talents like Josey (Ivory Coast), Mz Vee (Ghana) and Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania).
In other categories involving Nigerians, Tipple MMG’s Tekno beat Falz, Simi, Nasty C and others to Best Breakthrough Act award.
Starboy honcho Wizkid was the biggest Nigerian winner on the night as he scooped three awards in the Best Male category, edging out AKA, Black Coffee, Diamond Platnumz and Patoranking.
He also emerged winner in the African Artist Of The Year category beating Yemi Alade, Diamond Platnumz, Black Coffee and Sauti Sol.
The third award for Wizkid was in the Best Collaboration category which he jointly won with DJ Maphorisa.
