New York mayor de Blasio announces president bid for 2020

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced his intention to run for the office of US president.

De Blasio, who made this known on Thursday in a video released by his campaign office will become the 23rd prospective challenger to President Donald Trump, Aljazeera reports.

“There’s plenty of money in this world. There’s plenty of money in this country. It’s just in the wrong hands,” he said in the video.

While 76 percent of New York City voters have pledged their support towards his run, political observers have expressed that if his candidacy dwindles, de Blasio will be able to promote his policies and potentially angle for a job in a future Democratic administration.

With his candidacy, de Blasio becomes the latest in a line of New York City mayors who have run for president in which none has ever won.
