Nigeria to begin use of e-Yellow Card from July 1

The Federal Government has announced that the old version of the yellow card will no longer be acceptable from July 1, 2019.

In a statement on Friday by the Director, Media and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health, Boade Akinola, it was revealed that the old cards will be replaced with a new electronic Yellow Card.

Mashi said that the new card would contain enhanced security features that could be verified anywhere in the world by scanning the bar code or checking the card number on the yellow card portal.

The new e-Yellow Card is expected to stop the racketeering in fake yellow cards which are issued at point of airports and borders.

According to the statement, the World Health Organisation recommended that all international travellers, aged nine months and above and visiting Nigeria, must be vaccinated against yellow fever.

Yellow fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever caused by a virus transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and may cause fatal illness but it was a vaccine-preventable disease.

A Yellow Card which is a proof of vaccination against yellow fever, is a requirement for international travellers from risk countries like Nigeria and as evidence that the carrier has been vaccinated against the disease.
