Former Nigeria International, Sunday Oliseh wants the achievements of himself and his teammates in the Green Eagles of 1994 to be acknowledged by the Federal Government.

Oliseh, who was a member of the team considered to be Nigeria’s greatest football team in history, suggests that the government could name a street in the country in their honour.

He made the expression during the second edition of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Awards last Monday at Eko Hotels, Lagos, while also pouring out accolades on the NFF, who honoured the sporting heroes at the Gala.

The former Super Eagles coach went on to urge other sports federations in Nigeria to emulate the football federation by honouring the nation’s past heroes in sports.

“Indeed it is a great one for me and my teammates, those of us alive; we are very proud and it is also a moment to reflect on those who have passed on,” said Oliseh.

“We say a big thank you to the leadership of the NFF led by Amaju Pinnick, we really appreciate the gesture because it would go a long way to encourage others coming behind.

“Looking back at what the squad and what we achieved in 1994 at the Nations Cup, at the World Cup, also at the 1995 Afro/Asian Cup.

“Indeed, we cannot but ask for all those things that can crown our joy.

“We want a situation where a street in Nigeria be named after the Super Eagles 1994 squad just to acknowledge our achievements and spur others to continue to do well,” he added.

The class of 1994 Eagles were a superb team that conquered Africa in April of that year. They went on to perform excellently at the FIFA World Cup in June, 1994,and by the end of the tournament, Nigeria was ranked 5th in the world by FIFA.

Meanwhile, there is a planned reunion for the team later in April, to celebrate 25 years since their achievements.
