Onazi says he’ll be fit to fly with Super Eagles at 2019 Nations Cup

Despite being out of the game since December 2018, Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi is confident he will be fit to represent Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Trabzonspor of Turkey star ruptured his achilles tendon in a league match against Rizespor last month and has since undergone surgery.

There have been fears that the 26-year old may miss the AFCON billed for June following reports that his injury has ruled him out till the end of the season.

But Onazi, who joined the Eagles to the World Cup last year, told Complete Sports that he will be back on his feet in no time to ensure he features at the continental competition.

“Several reports claim I will not play again for Trabzonspor till the end of the season, but trust me I will be back before the season ends and play some games before the AFCON,” he said.

“I will begin my rehabilitation once I arrive back in Trabzon and I am confident that I will be fit for the AFCON.

“It (the injury) was a big setback, but I thank God for the way I am recuperating.”

Onazi, whose side are currently standing on second spot in the Turkish Super Lig, believes they stand a chance of winning the title this term.

Trabzonspor are six points behind leaders, Istanbul Basaksehir, who they face in top of the table clash on Sunday.

“We are hosting Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday and that’s a chance to reduce the gap to three,” Onazi pointed. “I believe we can achieve that and I will be in the stadium to cheer them up to victory.”
