Osun PDP wants ex-Gov Aregbesola arrested

Following the end of Mr Rauf Aregbesola’s tenure as governor of Osun State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded he be apprehended for an alleged offence he committed before emerging governor of the state in 2010.

The PDP on Wednesday urged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to urgently arrest Aregbesola for allegedly forging a police report he presented before an Election Petition Tribunal in 2007.

The Osun State chapter of the party made this call in a statement by its chairman, Soji Adagunodo, recalling that before taking over from his predecessor in November, 2010, Aregbesola and one other, were facing six counts bordering on forgery.

It said the case which was then before an Abuja High Court was stalled due to the immunity Aregbesola enjoyed when he became governor in 2010.

He therefore said, “Now that Mr Aregbesola no longer enjoys constitutional immunity, the Inspector General of Police is duty bound to arrest him and present him before the court to prove his innocence in the charge.”

According to Adagunodo, the “forged” police report was the reason the Appellate Tribunal in Ibadan ordered a retrial of Aregbesola’s petition in 2009.

“It was curious that the former governor and his party abandoned the report when their petition went back for trial in the same year.

“While forgery itself is a weighty crime, forging a security document like a police report should be a matter of concern to the public and must not be swept under the carpet in any guise,” he said.
