Oyegun takes Tinubu’s case to Buhari

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Tuesday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

There are indications that Oyegun’s visit to President Buhari was not unconnected with the call for his resignation by the national leader of the party, Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu had not long ago called for Odigie-Oyegun’s resignation owing to the national Chairman’s decision to ignore the APC National Working Committee (NWC) submission that the Ondo State governorship primary of the party be cancelled and that a fresh one conducted.

But Odigie-Oyegun, in his reply to the call had claimed he was concentrating on the Edo State governorship election and had no time to respond. He however promised that after the election, he would consult appropriately with other leaders of the party and if necessary will react.

The call for his resignation was supported by another prominent leader of the party, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who affirmed that Oyegun should be ready to pay for the consequences of his action.

Even the Deputy national Publicity Secretary of the party, Timi Frank, had also written President Buhari supporting the call by Tinubu for the national Chairman’s resignation.
Having finally consulted with the President, it was expected that Oyegun may now reply Tinubu and others calling for his resignation.

But speaking with newsmen after the visit, Oyegun said “There is no rift with Asiwaju; we have difference of opinion, difference of perception, and I think that is normal,” Oyegun answered.

“Yes, I agree that the nature of the statement was a bit harsh. The method of getting rid of a national chairman, if that is what I will call it, are spelt out in the constitution; they don’t take place on the pages of newspapers.”

He also stated that the national executive committee would deliberate on the issues at the appropriate time.
