Barely twenty four hours after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers staged a walkout over the defection of Senator Yele Omogunwa to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the lawmakers yesterday, resolved their rift.

The crisis followed a peace meeting between the Senate leadership and the two caucuses.‎ Senate Minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, declared later that it was noteworthy that the crisis was resolved in favour of peace and unity in the Senate.

The meeting which held shortly before plenary behind closed doors was said to have offered opportunities for both caucuses to open up on contentious issues that fueled the crisis.

At the commencement of plenary, the Senate Deputy Majority Leader, Bala Na’Allah, said it was important that the co-operation between the opposition and the majority caucus was allowed to continue in the interest of peace.

He said: “I honestly and sincerely commend the patriotism and commitment of the leadership of the PDP caucus ably guided by Senator Godswill Akpabio and supported by Senator Ike Ekweremadu. And to happily say that as from today, ‎I feel happy that I have been vindicated that this Senate is a distinct one and that we mean well for this country and there is nothing we do not have the capacity to resolve politically. I thank the leadership of PDP caucus for that very good quality.”

In a brief remark to appreciate the speedy resolution of the crisis, Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki said: “I can also note and add a word to commend the friends of the PDP caucus and continue to show that this Senate is one family. As we have always said, the major issue is national. We are here representing the country and the people that voted for us.

“The issues before us is not rarely about which party, but what is important is continue to move to Nigeria forward and I must continue to appreciate the collaboration and the brotherhood that has existed in this chamber and will continue to exist in the interest of this great country.”
