Rohr hopes Super Eagles’ protest over allowances does not affect Guinea clash

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is hopeful that the ongoing row on bonuses and allowances will not affect his team’s preparation ahead of their game against Guinea.

The Eagles shunned press conference on Tuesday ahead of their second Group B clash against Guinea at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to reports from the camp, the players were locked in a meeting to deliberate on the non-payment of their bonuses and allowances.

Vice-captain of the team, Ahmed Musa was expected to attend Tuesday’s pre-match conference along with Rohr, but but stayed back at the hotel with the rest of his teammates to discuss the issue.

“My player [Ahmed Musa] couldn’t attend the press conference today because they have a very important meeting,” said coach Gernot Rohr.

“I just hope the situation can be resolved so we can focus on what we have in front of us.”

The squad was an hour late for training on Tuesday and have not ruled out taking further action.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has denied it was responsible for the delay in paying the players’ bonuses. The government is yet to release money according to the football house.

It would be recalled that the U-20 team, the Flying Eagles also protested over the non-payment of their bonuses refusing to leave their hotel after their elimination at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.

Just days ago, the Super Falcons also staged a similar protest in France after they were knocked out by Germany in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Eagles, who defeated Burundi 1-0 in their opening match, will take on Guinea on Wednesday at the Alexandria Stadium.
