Sanchez's late winner against Burnley moves Arsenal to second

Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez scored a 98th-minute penalty to help 10-man Arsenal recover from an Andre Gray injury-time leveler to claim a thrilling win over Burnley at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal’s title chances appeared to have been derailed when Francis Coquelin fouled Ashley Barnes in the 93rd minute and Andre Gray converted from the spot to draw 1-1 after Shkodran Mustafi’s header had put the home team ahead in the 59th minute.

But minutes later, Ben Mee was penalised for a high foot on Laurent Koscielny in the Burnley area, and Sanchez deceived Clarets keeper Tom Heaton to grab the winner.

Arsenal have thus climbed above Liverpool and Tottenham, who both dropped points on Saturday.

Regardless of Xhaka being sent off in the 65th minute, the Gunners went ahead to grab the win, which now makes it their fifth consecutive league victory at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger, who protested Burnley’s penalty and was sent to the stands, admitted the visitors were very efficient in the game, but the win came for the Gunners like it did in their first meeting in the ongoing campaign.

“We finally got the win but of course it was very difficult for us. We couldn’t get the second goal, we played with 10 men and they played well as well. In the end, we got the three points we wanted,” Wenger said.

“Burnley are well organised, they make the game simple but efficient. We won there (away at Burnley) in the last second and we won again in the last second today.

“Every week and every game is an unbelievable fight for everybody,” he added.

Arsenal will travel to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, before hosting Watford in the Premier League on 31 January. Burnley, on the other hand, will host Bristol City in their FA Cup fourth round tie also on Saturday, before facing Leicester at Turf Moor in the league three days later.
