SIERRA LEONE: Partial results reveals ruling party in the lead

Partial results and certified tallies seen by Reuters from nine of the 16 voting districts in Sierra Leone reveals that Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC) holds a partial lead in the just concluded presidential polls.

The results shows that Kamara leads after securing 50.8 per cent of the nearly 1.94 million votes certified so far from Saturday’s election – a lead of about 30,000 votes over Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

Reports say the largely peaceful election process has come as a relief for the country of 7 million people, who endured a civil war in the 1990s and whose economy was dragged down by an Ebola epidemic in 2014-15 and a global slump in commodity prices in 2015.

The National Elections Commission of has not officially announced any official results from the election, which was delayed for several days due to a complaint of fraud lodged by a member of the APC.

The case that led to the injunction was filed by one Ibrahim Sorie Koroma, a lawyer linked to the ruling party All People’s Congress (APC). Lawyer Koroma in his filing averred that electoral fraud allegations should be investigated before the vote goes ahead.
