Soldiers, DSS operatives track, kill ex-militant Don Waney’s CSO

Troops of 222 Battalion, Nigerian Army and operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) Rivers State Command have tracked and killed one of the late Don Waney’s killer criminal gang member.

The deceased, Austin Agulegbu is said to be the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to late Don Waney and the 6th in Command of the criminal gang.

Recall that Don Waney and his gang were responsible for the shooting and killing of 23 innocent residents of RIvers state on New Year’s day in Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of the State.

Waney who took flight after the heinous crime was traced to Enugu State, where he was shot by soldiers while he was trying to escape.

Agulegbu, who is said to be the sixth in command to Waney was tracked to Obiaruku in Delta State.

Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Col. Aminu Iliyasu who revealed the killing of the notorious kidnap member of Waney’s gang said the effort was in compliance with the Presidential directive to fish out and bring to justice the perpetrators of the heinous killings of 23 innocent residents of Omoku.

According to him, “After a painstaking effort by the security agencies, Austin was traced to his hide out at a location along New Sapele Road, Obiaruku in Ukwani Local Government Area (LGA) in Delta State in the early hours of 14th February 2018.

“He was among the killer squad that killed 23 worshippers returning from the Cross Over vigil on 1st January 2018 at Omoku, Rivers State. Reliable information also has it that he and other gang members still at large were already making plans to attack security agencies locations, churches and schools within Rivers State as a reprisal to the clamp down on their remnants now at large.

“Agulegbu was however shot in an encounter with the security operatives and died before reaching the hospital. His body has been brought to Port Harcourt and handed over to the Rivers State Police Command”.

Chairman of the ONELGA, Osi Olisa who also confirmed the killing in a statement said, “The once bewildered people of ONELGA are beginning to live normal lives once again.

He further said that “The crackdown of the Chief Security Officer of late Omoku gang leader, Johnson Igwedibia a.k.a Don Waney is part of the ongoing effort to cleanse ONELGA of all social vices.

“As a Local Government Council, we shall continue to offer our best support to the Government of Rivers state and all the security agencies to make ONELGA safe for everyone.”
