Super Eagles not sure of qualifying, Algeria Coach says

Algeria coach Georges Leekens, despite his team’s 3-1 defeat to Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday, is still very hopeful that his North African side can qualify in the race to the Word Cup finals in Russia come June 2018.

Though their loss in Uyo means the Fennecs are five points adrift of the Super Eagles in Group B, Leekens is not giving up.

“We’ve not given up on qualification,” Leekens said.

“I never give up, it’s in my nature not to give up.
“We still have a mathematical chance of qualifying so it’s not over.”

The Algeria coach also made it clear to newsmen that even with the current six points of the Eagles, Nigeria is still not sure of qualifying for the finals.

“It’s a tough group and anything can still happen. Are you sure you (Nigeria) will qualify because you’re on top at the moment? Nigeria can still lose and the group will be open again.
“We played well against Nigeria today but we missed good chances to score and we got punished.”

It is however worthy of note that after the Match Day 2 fixtures yesterday, Nigeria has remained at the top of the Group B table with six points. Cameroon are second on two points after a 1-1 draw with Zambia who are now third and Algeria bottom on a point each.
