NJC recommends immediate compulsory retirement of Onnoghen

The Supreme Court has reserved judgement until May 17 in a suit by Cross River State Government challenging the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The Attorney-General of the state on behalf of the state government filed a suit marked SC/45/2019 against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) asking the court to nullify the suspension of the CJN.

Upon resumption of sitting on Thursday, the seven-man bench led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vigour, after hearing arguments from both the plaintiff and the defendants, fixed the date for judgement.

Lucius Nwosu (SAN ) argued on behalf of the plaintiff while Dayo Apata, Solicitor General of the Federation, argued for the defendants – the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation.

Recall that the embattled CJN was suspended and arraigned on a six-count charge for non declaration of assets.
