Toyin Abraham reveals battle with depression, suicidal thoughts

Nollywood actress, and mother of one, Toyin Abraham has revealed her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts stating that she was scared to talk about what she was going through at the time with close friends and family members.

Toyin Abraham who opened up in a no holds barred interview with Chude Jideonwo, where she opened up about her experience, said she considered jumping over the Third Mainland Bridge at the time.

The thespian shared how she went about her daily life while dealing with depression; “I gave everything I had out and moved into a hotel. If anyone wants to come and visit me, I will tell them to come, and we will be in the same room. I will later go to another room and stay there by myself. There was a time I told someone that I can actually jump the Third Mainland Bridge, it was that bad.

“I actually thought to myself that ‘if you die now Toyin, you would become more popular than you are now’,” she added.

When asked where her family was while she was going through all of this, Toyin said, “I just didn’t want to see them. I didn’t want to get attached to them. I am from a Christian home and I used to smoke cigarettes and they don’t approve, and I also didn’t want to get close to them because I thought I would die soon and so they won’t miss me.”

“I am a dove. My fear is gone now. Long gone. I talk about it to people now. I have the face; I have the story that God wants to use to touch many lives.”

The confession by the actress comes days after she denied suggestions on social media that she has replaced fellow actress Funke Akindele as the brand ambassador of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Social media had been awash with reports that Toyin Abraham had taken over Funke Akindele-Bello’s position after she flouted Federal Government social distancing directives with her infamous house party organised for her husband Abdul Rasheed Bello a.k.a. JJC Skillz.

The rumours were further fuelled after the NCDC shared a recent video on their social media page with caption; “In Yoruba language, actress @toyin_abraham1 talks about how to protect yourself and prevent the spread of #COVID19

However, the thespian made it clear in a statement on her Instagram page that she never replaced her colleague Funke Akindele as an ambassador, adding that she was merely showing support towards the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
