UCL: Liverpool to face Hoffenheim in playoff

Premier League giants, Liverpool, have been drawn with Bundesliga side, Hoffenheim, for a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The draw, which took place on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland, also saw Scottish champions, Celtic FC, draw their Kazakh counterparts, Astana, as Serie A giants, Napoli face Ligue 1 side, OGC Nice.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will play away for the first leg on 15 or 16 August, and host the reverse fixture at Anfield on 22 or 23 August.

Liverpool qualified for the Champions League play-off stage by finishing fourth in last season’s Premier League, behind Manchester City, Tottenham and champions, Chelsea.

Hoffenheim also took the same position in the Bundesliga, behind Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and champions, Bayern Munich.

The winner of the tie will join the top three of either league to the group stage of the Champions League, while the defeated team will enter the Europa League group stage.
