US won't let Khashoggi's murder to be swept under the carpet, US envoy says

The outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley has said that her country will not allow the murder of Washigton Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be swept under the carpet.

Haley who made her statements in an interview with US publication The Atlantic also said Saudi Arabia must be held accountable for the assassination of Khashoggi.

“You have Saudi government officials that did this in a Saudi consulate. We can’t give them a pass, because that’s not who America is,” Haley said in the interview.

“We can’t condone [the murder], we can’t ever say it’s OK, we can’t ever support thuggish behaviour, and we have to say that,” she added.

US President Donald Trump has moved to replace outgoing Haley who will be stepping down from her role before the year runs out.

In her place, Trump has nominated State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert who is described as someone with no prior policy or political experience to deal with some of the world’s thorniest issues.
