Westerhof says Super Eagles’ defeat to ‘unknown Madagascar’ a shame

Former Nigeria coach, Clemens Westerhof is of the opinion that the 2-0 defeat that the Super Eagles suffered against Madagascar last Sunday is disgraceful.

The Eagles were stunned by the minnows in their final group B game at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Fans from across the country have expressed their dissatisfaction on the display of team so far at the tournament, especially as they have scored only two goals in three matches.

And Westerhof, who led the Eagles to AFCON triumph back in 1994, has expressed his shock over the unexpected defeat to the Island country.

“Who is Madagascar? Where are they in Africa and the World? Who are their players and where do they play?,” queried Westerhof in a chat with CompleteSports.

“I’m surprised, it’s a shame that Super Eagles, with big and experienced players, disappointed us.”

The team’s manager, Gernot Rohr made five changes from the squad that defeated Guinea in their second game, but Westerhof thinks the changes were somewhat unnecessary.

“The tactics was wrong,” he continued.

“The changes were many from the players that played against Burundi and Guinea.

“Yes, maybe they didn’t give Madagascar any chance (underrated Madagascar).

“Its difficult to believe Super Eagles lost to a Madagascar team I can’t find (in the map).”

Prior to the defeat, Nigeria already qualified for the second round of the competition, only that after the defeat, they finished as runners-up in the group.

They are yet to be paired for their last-16 fixture.
