Worries as ICAO deadline axe dangles over Nigeria

As the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets a 2017 and 2018 deadline for member countries to beef up security within their airports, Nigeria may be among countries to request for extension of the deadline.

It will cost a minimum of $500 million for a member-county to install the equipment, depending on the number of airports it has.

At its annual general meeting in December 5, 2016, when the president of the organisation, Dr. Benard Aliu, a Nigerian, was re-elected, it was agreed the need to put a final stop to spate of bombings on flights and airport, and adopt high tracking.

It was also agreed that a specific date be adopted for installation of the needed technology to nip such in the bud.

But indications are that given the current economic hardship that Nigeria is facing, it will be difficult for the country to comply fully with the resolution.

The Minister of State, Aviation, Hadi Sirika assured all that Nigeria will work hard to complete the on going modernisation of the tracking navigation equipment, which has enjoyed 60 per cent completion.

It was learnt that, if the navigation equipment project is completed in 2017, government will thereafter focus on acquiring other technologies as required by ICAO.

However, experts say failure of Nigeria to comply with the agreement of member-countries will likely create some difficulties for the ICAO president in enforcing the order.

“If Nigeria wants its citizen in that job, it should not be among the countries to default in keeping to the new policy on security, given that it is already having some security challenges, ” said a former pilot with the defunct Nigeria Airways.

The point is, our government is not ready to spend money, not that there’s no money at all.

It’s high time we stopped using recession as an excuse for everything… what is important remains important! The government should not use recession as an excuse in endangering people’s lives. We don’t need to take security with levity, no and recession should also not hinder security.

$500m to install security equipment in Nigeria airports. I laugh, though we can meet up the deadline as it is 2018. But I am sure that $500m will be used to purchase inferior gadgets .
