#XENOPHOBIA: Ramaphosa condemns fresh attacks, orders police action

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned fresh violent xenophobic attacks on other African nationals over the weekend in Johannesburg, which claimed the lives of two victims.

In a statement on Monday, Cyril Ramaphosa called on the police to maintain vigilance and firmness in dealing with people who took the law into their own hands.

A speech by the veteran politician Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who was trying to quell tensions following a recent wave of deadly riots and xenophobic attacks was also disrupted by a section of the crowd which later left the venue and marched through the streets calling for foreigners to leave the country.

The development comes as Nigeria’s Consul General in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, says more than 600 people have indicated an interest in returning to Nigeria in the wake of the recent xenophobic violence in the South African city.

At least 10 people – two of them foreigners – have been killed and many others have been injured in the violence. No Nigerian nationals are known to have died.
