Copa America: Suarez to join Uruguay despite hamstring injury

Barcelona have confirmed that Luis Suarez suffered a hamstring injury during the Copa del Rey final but said the striker will join up with Uruguay to continue his rehabilitation on June 1.

Suarez, 29, was in tears following the 2-0 cup victory over Sevilla on Sunday night after picking up an injury that left his participation in this summer’s Copa America in doubt.

He underwent tests with Barcelona on Monday and his club have now indicated that he may be fit in time to play a role at the Copa America in the United States, with Uruguay’s first game taking place on June 5.

A Barca club statement read: “Tests on Monday morning have confirmed that FC Barcelona striker Luis Suárez has suffered an injury to the semimembranosus muscle in his right leg.

“Following the recommendations of the Club’s medical services team, the 2015/16 Golden Shoe winner will begin his rehabilitation in Barcelona. On 1 June, Suárez will join the Uruguay national team in the United States, where he’ll continue with the second phase of his recovery.”

Suarez missed the 2015 Copa America through suspension after biting Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup but made his return to action for his country in March.
