Conduct of elections in Nigeria burdensome – Yakubu
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday lamented that conducting elections in Nigeria is burdensome.
Yakubu stated this when he appeared at the National Assembly to defend the implementation of the commission’s 2024 budget.
He said INEC despite its status as one of the largest employers of labour in the country operated on a reduced budget of N40 billion lower than the N80 billion requested for its operations.
The INEC boss urged the National Assembly to organise a retreat to enable the lawmakers and the commission to collaborate, exchange ideas, and find solutions to issues affecting the electoral process in Nigeria.
“We need a major conversation, the commission cannot continue conducting elections all year round,” Yakubu stated.
He appealed to the parliament to ensure that the commission receives adequate funding for its operation.
The Federal Government allocated N126 billion to INEC in the 2025 budget proposal.
