JAPA: Seun Kuti says many Africans living abroad often conceal true challenges of day-to-day lives

Seun Kuti, scion of late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has declared that many Africans living abroad often conceal the true challenges of their day-to-day lives.

The musician who made the remarks while kicking against the ‘Japa syndrome’ during an Instagram live session condemned what he called an unwritten rule whereby Africans in the diaspora do not disclose the true realities of living abroad.

He said; ‘‘There is no single African who has Japa that can come and tell you that what I’m about to say is a lie. There is a silent, non-spoken, non-written agreement between every African who has travelled not to relay his true experience to his people.”

Seun clarified that many prospective migrants could think twice about leaving their native nations if Africans living overseas were open about their circumstances.

‘’Every single African here who has left Africa for greener pastures, they have an unwritten code among themselves not to tell you the reality of their day to day experience. If the Africans abroad create a blog to tell you their real experiences, nobody from Africa would go again. We would end up saying, ‘i would rather die.” He added.
