JUST IN: Gov Umahi appeals court ruling sacking him, deputy

Despite his grandstanding position, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has appealed a Federal High Court judgement sacking him and his deputy for dumping the political party through which they came to power.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Tuesday ordered the removal of the governor, his deputy, Kelechi Igwe and 16 members of the state House of Assembly over their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in November 2020.

The judge, who gave the verdict while ruling on an application filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ordered Umahi and Igwe to immediately vacate their offices and stop parading themselves as governor and deputy governor of the state.

The same fate befell the 16 lawmakers who joined the duo in APC.

But in the appeal filed on their behalf by Chukwuma Machukwu Umeh (SAN) at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, on Wednesday, the appellants asked the court to reverse the lower court’s ruling, describing the verdict as a miscarriage of justice.

They urged the court to allow their appeal and set aside the lower court’s “harsh judgment.”
