Social register expansion, support for farmers; all the palliatives in Buhari’s second COVID-19 broadcast

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his broadcast to the nation Monday evening, announced a number of palliative measures for Nigerians as a buffer against the austerity induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He stated that he had directed that the social register be expanded from 2.6 million households to 3.6 million in the next two weeks.

“This means we will support an additional one million homes with our social investment programs.

“A technical committee is working on this and will submit a report to me by the end of this week,” Mr Buhari said.

Towards attaining food security for the nation, he affirmed that he had ordered the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the National Security Adviser, the Vice Chairman, National Food Security Council and the Chairman, Presidential Fertiliser Initiative to work with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to synergise on how to reduce the potential ravaging impact of the pandemic on the 2020 farming season to the barest minimum.
