Finally, Osinbajo signs N7.4tn 2017 budget

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday signed the 2017 Appropriation Bill into law.

The acting president upon his return from a trip to Anambra State, was joined by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Minster for Budget and planning, Sen Udo Udoma at the State House Abuja for the budget signing ceremony.

Osinbajo had only two days ago been given the go ahead by President Muhammadu Buhari, who is away in London on a medical vacation, to sign the budget into law.

It would be recalled that the federal legislators had in May passed the record budget plan, which is bigger than the 7.298 trillion naira draft spending plan submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2016.

The presidency had stated that the budget signing was being delayed because it was being looked at by the executive, to ensure there were no ‘foreign items’ in the document different from what had been submitted to the legislature.

observers however say, Osinbajo may have been bidding time, waiting to get the go-ahead from his principal to sign the budget.

Sincerely I don’t like this idea of waiting for a principal who’s lying sick in the U.K. Before Osinbajo can make any decision. Being the acting president, he has the right to sign the budget without getting any authorization from Buhari.

Osinbajo is a loyalist and cannot outshine his master. No matter the authority he has Today, Buhari put him there, waiting for Buhari’s voice was the right thing to do.

Very good, so the government can now start pumping into the economy to stabilize things. Let’s see how effective the budget would be in three months.

I’m still confused as to why the “Acting President” had to be given go ahead before signing the budget. So if the go ahead had not come, for whatever reason, we would still be waiting for budget by middle of June. Aren’t we just a peculiar country?

What is so special about budget signing that they are calling it a ceremony? Nonsense. Something they ought to sign solemnly after wasting time.
