IRAN: Wild protests in Tehran over US decision to pull-out of nuclear deal

Thousand of angry protesters stormed the streets of Tehran, Iran in wild demonstrations against the decision of the United States to pull-out from a unilateral nuclear deal.

Reports say demonstrators were seen brandishing placards with inscriptions reading “Down with USA” and “[Donald] Trump, you are talking nonsense”, referring to the US president who called the deal “horrible”, “one-sided” and “defective at its core”.

According to the state-run Fars news agency, the protesters also chanted “Death to America” and “We fight, we die, but we do not accept any compromise”.

Reacting to the decision by President Donald Trump to pull-out of the nuclear deal, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the move as “silly”, “impudent” and “worthless”.

Khamenei who was speaking from his country’s capital of Tehran addressed the American president directly, saying: “You cannot lift one finger against us.”

Days ago, Trump announced that the US is effectively withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, defying last-ditch diplomatic efforts by his European allies to convince him otherwise.

Under the deal signed in Vienna in 2015 with six world powers – the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union – Iran scaled back its uranium enrichment programme and promised not to pursue nuclear weapons.

In exchange, international sanctions against Iran were lifted, allowing it to sell its oil and gas worldwide.
